Photos of statues of Orixas in Salvador, Bahia

Claire Marie Cesareo
Professor of Anthropology

About Me

I joined the faculty of Saddleback College in 2000, after having previously taught at several other colleges/universities including Whittier College, New York University, and Columbia University. I am a cultural anthropologist who continues to do research, primarily in Brazil, on issues of agrarian reform, social movements (such as the Landless Workers Movement in Brazil), and the construction and use of social memory, especially around feelings of nostalgia. Other areas of interest include the use of photography in the construction of memory, the role of religion in social change, and the politics of ethnographic practice.

My current projects include ethnographic research on various student populations at Saddleback College (including Latinx, undocumented students, former foster youth, and formerly incarcerated students) and a study of religious iconography in tattoo culture.
